Is a Cholesterol test right for you?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that circulates within the blood as lipoproteins. Too much cholesterol can clog up your arteries and increase your risk of serious health conditions such as heart attacks and strokes. Six out of 10 people in the UK have high cholesterol, but it does not generally cause symptoms and can only be detected from a blood test. Your total cholesterol is the overall cholesterol found in your blood. It includes your good cholesterol (HDL – which carries badcholesterol away from the cells and back towards the liver), your bad cholesterol (LDL – which carries cholesterol to the cells), and your triglycerides (another form of bad cholesterol carrying cholesterol to the cells). Our Cholesterol Check tests for all three, as well as total cholesterol. We measure risk by looking HDL as a ratio of your total cholesterol - the lower the ratio number, the healthier it is for you.
